Progress on third gas unit at Sarir power plant

|

The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced on 22 March progress in preparing the third gas unit at the Sarir power plant following the arrival of the unit’s generator.

Spare parts have also arrived, supplied by German energy development company Siemens, as part of ongoing works to refurbish and upgrade the plant’s units, boost production capacity, address anticipated peak summer loads and meet growing demand, according to a statement by GECOL.

As previously announced by the company, major overhaul work has continued on the first gas unit at the Sarir power plant, alongside a project to develop the unit’s electrical systems and control mechanism.

The Sarir plant has the distinction of being Libya’s first electricity generation facility to operate entirely on natural gas. This milestone was achieved following the completion of a project in 2021 that converted the plant from liquid fuel to a 100-percent natural gas operation. The plant currently has a production capacity of 750 megawatts
