Discussions on the electricity interconnection project between Libya, Tunisia and Algeria

Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chiboub, and the CEO of Algeria’s state-owned electricity and gas company Sonelgaz, Mourad Adjal, had talks on 9 January in their countries joint energy collaboration but also on strengthening the tripartite electrical interconnection between Tunisia, Algeria, and Libya.
According to the Tunisian ministry, this collaboration aims to address energy challenges, particularly during peak electricity consumption in the summer, by reducing the strain on transmission and distribution networks in the three countries.
The project took a significant stop forward last November when a successful 24-hour synchronised electricity interconnection test was conducted between the three countries’ grids. It involved a power exchange of between 400 and 500 MW.
The interconnection project was agreed in Tunis in April at the first tripartite summit that brought together Libyan Presidency Council chairman, Mohamed Menfi, Tunisia’s President Kais Saied and Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
